I grew up in a house that sat on fifteen wooded acres. In the summer and fall months, I would often fall asleep with my bedroom window cracked, listening to the call of the whippoorwill. While searching for potential album art, I noticed that Wikipedia’s cited folklore listed the whippoorwill’s call as a bad omen; one New England legend says the whip-poor-will can sense a soul departing, and can capture it as it flees. For me however, it was a simple bedtime comfort; rural white noise.
